Photodynamic Systems
The Photodynamic Systems research line focuses on the development of technologies based on Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) — a minimally invasive therapeutic approach that uses the activation of photosensitive molecules by light to induce selective cytotoxic effects in target cells, such as tumor cells or pathogenic microorganisms.
Studies conducted by the PhotoN Lab in this area aim to improve the efficacy and selectivity of photodynamic treatments through the encapsulation of photosensitizers in smart nanocarriers, such as liposomes, micelles, hybrid nanoparticles, and polyelectrolyte complexes. Encapsulation enhances the solubility, stability, and bioavailability of photoactive agents, while enabling controlled release at the desired site.
Another important focus is the modulation of phototoxicity through formulation adjustments, selection of specific wavelengths, and the development of systems responsive to tumor microenvironment stimuli (such as pH or enzymes). Applications include the treatment of colorectal cancer, melanoma, microbial infections, and potential uses in biofilms and dermatology.
